Shakhtar Donetsk to seal playoff spot

Shakhtar Donetsk to seal playoff spot

Shakhtar Donetsk is looking to seal their knockout stage series against Stade Rennes as they meet for their second leg. During their first leg, Shakhtar shows power, which gives them the victory on that match. Their first match ended in a 2-1 win for Shakhtar, inching closer for a spot in the playoffs. However, expect Rennes to do everything in this match for their chances in the playoffs. This is not impossible though, as they are only down by one goal, but it will not be easy for them. These two teams meat once again on February 24, 2023, at 4:00 AM (GMT+8), with Rennes as hosts.

This will only be the second time that these two teams will meet, with their first is their meeting on their first leg. In addition to the worries of the hosts, they are actually unlucky on their last four games. From those four games, three of those ended in loss, except from their 2-0 win against Clermont Foot. On the other hand, the visitors are the complete opposite of their opponents. They are currently unbeaten in their last five matches across all competitions, claiming two wins and three draws. However, their different momentum coming into this game makes this match more exciting.

On their last match, they had a 2-1 home victory, a lead they need to protect in this game. Shakhtar is also looking to make it two successive competitive wins in this match. They last had two consecutive wins way back November 2022, which is not impossible. In fact, they are now unbeaten in their last five straight games. They last tasted defeat when they had a friendly 1-0 defeat against Austria Wien on January 20. During the first half of the season, they struggled a lot in the Champions League. With that, they are looking to inch closer to their second Europa League title.

Shakhtar will be without Maryan Shved, as he is currently struggling due to his groin injury. With that, Oleksandr Zubkov is expected to replace him in this match.

Considering their run right now, it is beyond obvious that Rennes need to be at their best in the last leg of this round. They are still lucky that they were able to record a 2-0 win against Clermont Foot domestically. That win could help them boost their confidence, but they still need to be mindful of their goal difference. Despite their disadvantage, this squad is still eyeing to fancy their chances. They remain hopeful to be able to turn the tables around, and take advantage of having the crowd at their backs. Their home turf is their biggest advantage coming into this match. At home, they were able to pick up eight wins form their last nine matches at home.

Martin Terrier, whose injury was a massive blow for Rennes, is still not participating in this match. Additionally, they will also be without Lorenz Assignon, and Hamari Traore, who are still nursing their injuries.
