Sevilla FC to book semis spot

Sevilla FC are looking to clinch a semi-finals spot in the Copa del Rey when they meet with Atletico Madrid for their quarterfinals. These two teams had a colorful campaign in the Copa del Rey, which gives them qualification in the next round. Sevilla dominated their last 16 match against Getafe, winning in a 3-1 match. Despite Sevilla‘s poor run domestically, they were not able to bring it in Copa del Rey, thus, their quarterfinals spot. On the other hand, Atletico‘s qualification is indeed impressive, as they eliminated the defending champions. Atletico had a 4-2 win against Real Madrid, earning them a spot in the quarterfinals. Sevilla and Atletico will meet for the 181st time on January 26, 2024, at 4:00 AM (GMT+8).

Sevilla, the European second-tier champions, are now seeking a chance in the Copa del Rey after their struggles in the top flight of Spanish football. The team has already secured four away wins in the 2022-23 season, defeating lower-tier opponents Quintanar, Atletico Astorga, and Racing Ferrol. They also defeated Getafe in the last-16 stage, earning a 3-1 win over their La Liga counterparts. Sevilla’s La Liga trip to Girona saw a 5-1 victory by Artem Dovbyk-inspired team. Despite being 17th in the La Liga rankings, Sevilla aims to improve on last year’s Copa del Rey campaign. Last year, it ended with a quarter-final loss to Osasuna. However, Atletico has won three successive victories over Sevilla in La Liga, including a 1-0 home win just before Christmas after a 6-1 obliteration in the capital 10 months ago.

Sevilla could benefit from an attacking acquisition, as Morocco’s Youssef En-Nesyri remains on international duty. Marcos Acuna is recovering from a thigh problem, and Loic Bade is fine despite muscular overload. Marcao will be drafted into the backline if Bade is unavailable.

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana, securing their revenge in the Copa del Rey. Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme’s extra time efforts propelled Atletico into their second consecutive quarter-final. Since clinching their 10th and most recent Copa crown in 2012-13, Atletico has come up short in four of their last six quarter-final appearances. This includes against Real Madrid in 2022-23. However, their success over Los Blancos extended their unbeaten run at home to 25 matches. It has been over a year since Simeone last oversaw a competitive defeat at the Metropolitano Stadium, but an Alvaro Morata strike helped Granada win in Monday’s top-flight battle. With Valencia’s victory over Athletic Bilbao, Atletico has risen to fourth in the La Liga table and will focus on the Copa del Rey, where they have not lost at home since January 2018.

Mozambique’s left-back Reinildo has been ruled out of the Africa Cup of Nations due to a 2-2 draw with Ghana. He is expected to return to Madrid before Thursday’s game, but his return is expected for the weekend’s La Liga match against Valencia. Angel Correa may be replaced by Moise Kean.

Prediction:

Atletico Madrid (1.0)
Odds: -0.87
