Sevilla FC appoints Diego Alonso as their new manager, replacing Jose Luis Mendilibar, following their underwhelming campaign. However, he stepped down coaching the Uruguay team, after he failed to make the team go past the group stage. Coaching football is no longer new for Alonso, considering his stint for Uruguay, but this is the first time that he will venture in the European football. However, during his active years in playing, he played in the Spanish clubs, where Valencia and Atletico Madrid are few of those. Mendilibar’s dismissal to Sevilla FC is because of their slow start this season.
Sevilla FC sees new hope with Diego Alonso
Sevilla, although they had a colorful journey with Mendilibar, failed to meet expectations early this season. Following their win in the Europa League, they were not able to build momentum from that, which is the main reason why they slacked Mendilibar. They are now at the 14th of the La Liga league table, and are hoping to improve their standings. Now that Alonso arrived at their club, they are hopeful that they will slowly improve their way of playing. In a statement, the club announced the arrival of Alonso for Sevilla. “Sevilla FC and Diego Alonso have reached an agreement for the Uruguayan to become the Blanquirrojo’s new coach until the end of the current season,” they said. He now became the club’s fourth manager in a span of a year.
Although Alonso is new when it comes to coaching the European football, he is no longer new in coaching. In fact, he was able to manage several Latin American teams, including teams in the Uruguayan top flight. Sevilla are hoping to gain something from his experiences, most especially his experience in the World Cup. Although the level of competitiveness in the European football has a huge difference from the others, Sevilla believes that Alonso is capable of leading them. They will next face Real Madrid in the La Liga, who are currently leading in the league table, on October 22, 2023, at 12:30 AM (GMT+8).
