Sevilla eyes fortune in UCL

Sevilla eyes fortune in UCL

Sevilla are aiming to finally end their misfortunes this season, seeking to defeat Lens for their meeting in the Champions League. Domestically, Sevilla are not doing well, as they have been struggling since they started their campaign. This is already the 11th qualification of Sevilla in the Champions League, but this is already their fourth-straight qualification. On the other hand, Lens is a team who did not have that much experience in the Champions League. In fact, this is just Lens‘ third qualification in the Champions League, with their last participation being recorded two decades ago. They last qualified in the contest during the 2002-03 season, but only entered the first group stage. This meeting is on September 21, 2023, at 3:00 AM (GMT+8).

Sevilla secured their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Las Palmas in La Liga. It was a 71st-minute winner by Dodi Lukebakio. Sergio Ramos made his debut during that win. Moreover, Sevilla is in the group stage for the fourth time in a row, but have yet to win a title here. Additionally, it seems like this team have been struggling against Ligue 1 teams, suffering five losses. Last season, they finished third in the Group G table and were demoted to the UEFA Europa League. Their early elimination from the competition proved to be a blessing in disguise, as they lifted their seventh Europa League trophy. In fact, in Europa League, they have a 100% record at home, keeping three clean sheets in four games.

Unfortunately, Marcao, and Tanguy Nianzou remains to be unavailable for Sevilla because of their injuries. This is also the case for Alfonso Pastor, who still have a long way to go before fully recovering.

Lens

Champions League: Lens

Lens, the 2022-23 Ligue 1 runners-up, have been unable to win in five games and are currently at the bottom of the league standings. They last appeared in the Champions League in 2002-03, but have a better record in seven meetings against La Liga teams, with four wins. Les Sang et Or, on the other hand, are in poor form, having suffered three consecutive defeats and failing to score in their last two games. They may struggle in their first Champions League game in 21 years. However, Lens are coming into this game with aims of proving they deserve their spots in the contest. This is a team who have never escaped the group stage, making them eager to achieve higher heights here.

They remain to be without Jimmy Cabot, and Wuilker Farinez, who remains unavailable because of their long-term injuries. David Costa is missing though, because of a concern in the shoulder, but Nampalys Mendy is back for the team.

Sevilla (1.0)
