Philippines Women seeks to impress

Philippines Women is looking to impress as early as their opener with a win against Switzerland Women as they kick-off their World Cup campaign. This is the first-ever appearance of the Philippines in the World Cup, while Switzerland is on their second. Philippines qualify in the World Cup after reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 AFC Asia Cup through penalties. Switzerland on the other hand made it to the World Cup, after a 2-1 win against Wales. They qualified in the contest in 2015, but failed to repeat their luck during the 2019 edition of the contest. This will be the first-ever meeting between Philippines and Switzerland. Fortunately for both teams though, they both have a good momentum coming into this game. This meeting will be on July 21, 2023, at 1:00 PM (GMT+8).

This is the first time ever that the Philippines qualified in the Women’s World Cup, which made them hungry to leave a mark here. In fact, this is the first-time ever that a senior squad from the Philippines made an appearance in FIFA. Philippines is coming into this game with a good momentum, as they have won four of their last five games. However, in eight of their last 10 games, the only kept one clean sheet, an area they need to improve. Their last match is against Vietnam, where they were able to score a 2-1 win during the SEA Games in May. Additionally, they are one of the eight nation that are set to debut in this World Cup edition. A win in this match would give them confidence for their future matches. A history would be made for the Philippines if they could score a victory on their opening match.

In defense, Philippines would be led by Olivia McDaniel, Hali Long, and Dominique Randle. Moreover, Tahnai Annis will play as her country’s captain. She is also leading their central midfield, along with Jaclyn Sawicki, and Sara Eggesvik.

Switzerland on the other hand is a team who is now on their second qualification in the World Cup. They first qualified in the World Cup during the 2015 edition of the contest. During the 2015 World Cup, they were able to reach the Round-of-16, which is already a good result. As they open another campaign in the World Cup, they are hopeful to at least improve their finish in the contest. Unfortunately though, they are winless in their last eight matches, drawing six, and losing to two. However, in any of their qualification games, they did not concede more than once, which could bring them confidence here. Their biggest advantage in this match is their experience in the World Cup. However, if they want to make use of that advantage, they need to improve their form.

Iman Beney is not available in this match, following the ligament injury she suffered, so she will be replaced by Amira Arfaoui. Luana Buhler is going to star in defense along with Julia Stierli. Lia Walti on the other hand is hoping to make an impact, as she aims to dictate the game in the middle.
