Paris Saint-Germain proves supremacy

Paris Saint-Germain is looking to prove their power in the Champions League, with a win against another dominant team, Borussia Dortmund. PSG is no longer new in the Champions League, as this is also their 16th qualification in the contest. Moreover, this is also the 12th-straight qualification of PSG in the Champions League, but they have never won a title. PSG‘s best finish in the contest is when they finished as the runners-up during the 2019-20 season. Meanwhile, Dortmund is now on their 22nd Champions League qualification. Moreover, this is also their eighth-straight appearance in the contest, but unlike PSG, Dortmund were able to win one title in the contest during the 1996-97 season. The fifth meeting between these two teams is on September 20, 2023, at 3:00 AM (GMT+8).

PSG’s Ligue 1 title was secured by Galtier. However, the Frenchman’s departure was inevitable after a 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the 2022-23 season. Former Barcelona treble winner Luis Enrique has taken over, but has led PSG to their worst points total since their Qatari takeover. The reigning champions have amassed just eight points from a possible 15 so far. Unfortunately, they suffered another chastening home loss at the weekend, going down 3-2 to Nice. This leaves them fifth in the top-flight table, uncharted territory for the perennial title holders. PSG’s troubles were expected as they settled into the post-Lionel Messi and Neymar era. However, another lavish summer of spending has not had the desired effect for the hosts, who have lost five of their last nine competitive fixtures in front of their own fans.

Kylian Mbappe is expected to be available in this match, despite his minor injury, in the knee, as he chose to shook off that injury. However, although he is available here, PSG still have a large number of absentees here. Marco Asensio, Nordi Mukiele, Nuno Medes, Presnel Kimpembe, Lee Kang-in, Sergio Rico, and Alexandre Letellier are all absent.

Dortmund, led by Edin Terzic, are aiming to end Bayern Munich’s dominance in the Bundesliga and regain their European stardom. Despite two disappointing draws against Bochum and Heidenheim before the international break, they reversed a 2-1 deficit to win 4-2 against Freiburg. Dortmund’s unbeaten run across all competitions has extended to 13 matches, scoring in every contest. However, they still await their first away clean sheet of the season. BVB only won two of their group-stage affairs last year before a last-16 exit to Chelsea. Only one of the visitors’ last six away matches in the competition has ended in victory, a 4-1 drubbing of Sevilla last October. Dortmund defeated PSG 2-1 in the first leg of their last-16 tie in the 2019-20 Champions League, but the Tuchel-led Parisiens defeated BVB’s regular nemesis Bayern in the final, crushing their dreams of European stardom.

Dortmund is no better when it comes to injuries, as they also have a list of injuries for this match. They are without Thomas Meunier, Mateu Morey, and Julien Duranville, who are unavailable due to fitness concerns.
