Nigeria Women are looking to book their spots in the knockout stage of the Women’s World Cup, with a win against Ireland Women. Nigeria and Ireland are at the both ends of the group standings, with Nigeria on top, and Ireland at the bottom. While Nigeria is looking to seal their spots in the next round, Ireland just wants to end their campaign positively. They are already eliminated in the contest, after failing to win their first two matches. As for Nigeria, although they are sitting at the top, they are not secured of the knockout stage yet. They are just with the same points with the team at the second, and with only one point lead with the third. Moreover, this is the first time that these two teams meet each other. This meeting will be on July 31, 2023, at 6:00 PM (GMT+8).
Nigeria Women
Nigeria are looking to go unbeaten until the end of their group stage as they eye to book their ticket to the knockout stage. They were able to have a 3-2 win against Australia on their last match, giving them a chance in the next round. Australia are actually on the lead, not until Uchenna Kanu equaled the game with the first half’s last kick. Moreover, Asisat Oshoala stepped up on that match, as she put up her squad on the lead. Although she was off the bench, she already made an impact, which made her remarkable in the contest. Osinachi Ohale was also able to contribute for Nigeria’s win, scoring a goal for them as well. If Nigeria are fortunate to win here, it will be their third time to qualify in the knockout round. Their win against Australia is already a morale-boost for them.
They will remain to be with Michelle Alozie, Ohale, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Ashleigh Plumptre as their back four. Moreover, Deborah Abiodun is returning here, following the suspension she spent on their last match.
Ireland Women
Ireland on the other hand is one of the teams who made a debut in the World Cup in this edition, making their results not surprising. They are already eliminated in the contest, as they remain to be winless in their campaign. They are from a 2-1 loss against Canada in their last campaign, where only Megan Cannolly scored for Ireland. She actually tied the match, but her teammates were not able to produce more goals for their team. Unfortunately, Canada’s Adriana Leon scored for her squad, giving them the victory. Ireland does not have a good momentum as well since they only won one of their seven matches this year. Additionally, in their last seven matches, they only scored twice, which is not a good sign for them. Nonetheless, Ireland are still looking to at least win their last game in the contest.
Heather Payne will be unavailable in this match, due to an injury she sustained during their warm up against Canada. Marissa Sheva on the other hand could be recalled for the starters here.
