Mexico looks to extend history

Mexico is aiming to inch closer to the title to extend their history, by winning against Jamaica, who just renewed their confidence. Mexico is the most successful team in the contest, winning eight titles in their history. Jamaica on the other hand is with confidence coming here, following their win in the quarter-finals against Guatemala. These two teams are no longer new to each other as they already squared off 31 times across all contests. Their first meeting against each other was recorded in 1962, and from their 31 meetings, it was Mexico who leads, 21-5. The last meeting between Mexico and Jamaica is during the COCACAF Nations League, which ended in a 2-2 draw. The semi-finals match between Mexico and Jamaica is on July 13, 2023, at 10:00 AM (GMT+8).

Mexico did not end their group stage on a positive note, losing against Qatar, 1-0, on their last group stage match. Although they lost to their last group stage match, that does not change the fact that they are already qualified for the next round. They bounced back though, after comfortably winning against Costa Rica in a 2-0 win in the quarterfinals. That win earned them a qualification in this semi-finals meeting. Those two goals are from Orbelin Pineda, who opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, while Erick Sanchez scored during the 87th minute. From the last four editions of the Gold Cup, Mexico were able to book a finals spot for three times. Moreover, from those contests, they were able to secure two wins, in the 2015 and 2019 edition.

Considering that Pineda and Sanchez made it possible for Mexico to book their semis spots, many are expecting them to do the same. Moreover, expect slight changes from the Mexican squad coming into this game.

Jamaica on the other hand finished at the second of their group standings, with the same points as the team above them. A 1-0 win against Guatemala helped them earn their spots in the semi-finals. It was a 51st-minute goal from Amari’i Bell, who helped Jamaica to reach this stage. They are now in a three-game winning run, and were able to score in their four games in the contest. Moreover, as they go against their opponents here, it seems like they have the goal advantage, outscoring Mexico, 11-9. They have one goal in mind through, and that is to reach the finals stage once again, which is not new to them. In fact, form those last four editions, they finished as runners-up during the 2015 and 2017 editions. It is not surprising though, as they are an impressive team in the contest, having the second-best attacking record. Nonetheless, this squad will once again try to reach the finals of the contest.

There might be a little changes from their starting squad. Demarai Gray is looking to provide an impact for Jamaica, while Andre Blake is looking to continue leading his squad.
