Luis Suarez ends career with Uruguay
Uruguay’s all-time top scorer, Juan Suarez, has announced his retirement from the national team. Suarez, who has played for the national team for 14 years, has 69 goals in 142 appearances. He last played for Uruguay in the 2024 Copa America third-place play-off against Canada in July, scoring a 92nd-minute equalizer and successfully dispatching his penalty in the shootout. Suarez has represented Uruguay at nine major tournaments and was part of their 2011 Copa America-winning side. He scored four times at the 2011 Copa America, including twice in the semi-finals and once in the final, and was named Player of the Tournament. Suarez’s retirement comes as he becomes an older player with an incredible history with the national team.
“I was lucky to win many titles in my career, but I would not change the Copa América title for anything in the world,” he said. “That Copa América trophy in 2011 was the most beautiful moment I experienced in my career as a professional player. I would not change it for anything and look, I won a lot of other things,” he added. Despite the retirement announcement, he will play his final match for Uruguay against Paraguay for their World Cup qualifiers.
