Inter Milan aims for a third straight title

Inter Milan and Napoli FC are now off for a finals showdown in the Supercoppa Italiana, as both squads eye the title. Both Inter and Napoli dominated their semi-finals campaign respectively, which is not surprising. Inter qualified in the finals, due to a 3-0 win against Lazio, while Napoli qualified here due to their 3-0 win against Fiorentina. Moreover, Inter eyes for a win in the finals, as they want to clinch the title for three-straight seasons. On the other hand, for Napoli, they eye to finally win once again in the contest, after nearly a decade. Additionally, these two teams are no longer new to each other, as they already had 171 meeting prior to this match. Inter and Napoli‘s 172nd meeting is on January 23, 2023, at 3:00 AM (GMT+8).

Inter Milan have secured their spot in the Supercoppa final after dominating their Roman opponents from the first minute to last. Inter have won the last two editions of the Supercoppa, beating AC Milan 3-0 last season and Juventus a year ago. They are now aiming for a hat-trick. Milanese giants Monza have also secured a 5-1 victory over Monza in Serie A, keeping them ahead of Juve in the title race. Inter’s primary target is the Scudetto, following a win over Napoli and a potentially decisive Derby d’Italia match with Juventus. However, led by Thuram and captain Lautaro Martinez, they are also in contention to win the Champions League and could potentially add another trophy to their cabinet.

Inter have a full squad for Napoli due to Juan Cuadrado’s Achilles surgery. Additionally, their midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu recovering from a knock. Lautaro Martinez has achieved 20 goal involvements in each of the last four seasons, surpassing only Mohamed Salah, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane.

Napoli, who have switched from their Scudetto-winning 4-3-3 setup to Walter Mazzarri’s preferred three-man defense. They defeated last season’s Coppa Italia runners-up Fiorentina in the Supercoppa’s first-ever semi-final tie. Giovanni Simeone scored the first goal, and substitute Alessio Zerbin added two late goals. The Partenopei are now 90 minutes from lifting the trophy, traditionally decided between Italy’s league champions and cup winners. Napoli ended a 33-year Scudetto drought last spring but have recently struggled with their title defence. They are currently eighth in the table, five points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina. Champions League qualification may still be within reach, but a significant shift in momentum is needed. A third straight win would provide a shot in the arm ahead of a crucial league clash with Lazio, who were vanquished by Inter in Friday’s second semi-final.

Napoli faces Inter in Saudi Arabia without Victor Osimhen, Frank Anguissa, and Walter Mazzarri due to their absences at the Africa Cup of Nations. Alex Meret is sidelined with a hamstring, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Jens Cajuste are suspended.
