Cuba to make a strong return

Cuba is looking to make a strong return in the Gold Cup with a win against Guatemala, as they return in the contest since 2019. Guatemala on the other hand is aiming to prove that they deserve their spot in the contest this season. Both Cuba and Guatemala qualified in the contest after topping their respective groups in the Nations League. Additionally, this is already the 16th meeting between these two teams, and it was Guatemala who recorded more wins. From those 16 matches, Guatemala was able to win nine matches, while Cuba only have four wins. Moreover, the remaining three matches all ended in draws. This meeting will be on June 28, 2023, at 8:45 AM (GMT+8).

Cuba is a team who have yet to make appearance in the contest since 2019, which is why they are eager to start strong in this match. Fortunately, they were able to finish on the top of their group stage in the Nations League. With 15 points from their group stage matches, Cuba were able to sit at the top of their group. However, they do not have a good momentum coming into this game as they are from a 2-0 defeat against Uruguay. Although it is just a friendly match, it could have brought them a good momentum as they aim for a strong start. Additionally, they failed to score in their last two matches, which is not helpful in their run. It is just unfortunate that those defeats are coming from games near this contest.

With experiences, Jassael Herrera, Aldair Ruiz, and Romario Torres are expected to lead this squad in their campaign. Additionally, they can also rely to their captain, Aricheell Hernandez, and Sandy Sanchez to score goals in their campaign.

Guatemala on the other hand is doing quite well during the Nations League, a run they want to repeat here. In preparation for the Gold Cup, Guatemala participated in the friendlies, but unfortunately, they suffered a loss. They succumbed to Venezuela on their most recent match in the friendlies, in a 1-0 defeat to Venezuela. Additionally, Guatemala are eager to end their losing opening streak in the contest. From their last 11 appearances in the Gold Cup, they all lost their game openers, a streak they want to end. Fortunately, Guatemala have won all their last four matches against Cuba, where they can gain confidence from. However, they only managed to keep two clean sheets in their last 11 games across all contests. Considering that they are playing on the road here, this format might not work for their advantage here.

Experience is one of the greatest advantage for Guatemala, as they have the seniors who could step-up for them. Only Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who have yet to make an appearance in the contest.

Odds: -0.89
