Colombia Women is looking to keep their chances tight for a better finish by winning their opener against the South Korea Women squad. Both Colombia and South Korea are no longer new when it comes to the World Cup. While Colombia is on their third qualification, this is already the fourth qualification for South Korea. Moreover, when it comes to experience, it looks like the South Korea squad is just better by one appearance. Both Colombia and South Korea only managed to reach the Round-of-16 in their campaign. This record made them eager to at least advance in the quarterfinals in this edition of the World Cup. Although both are no strangers to the World Cup, this will be the first time that these two teams will meet in their history. Their meeting will be on July 25, 2023, at 10:00 AM (GMT+8).
Colombia Women
Colombia’s qualification in the World Cup is during the 2011 and 2015 editions of the contest, but their results do not look positive that much. During the 2011 edition, they failed to escape the group stage, while they finished at the Round-of-16 in 2015. As they are coming into their third World Cup appearance, they are hoping that they could at least have a better finish. Colombia secured their spots in the World Cup after being the runners-up of the 2022 Copa America Femenina. It is just unfortunate that they were not able to secure their title in the contest, after they had a 1-0 loss against Brazil. During their friendlies against China, they failed to secure a win, as their match ended in a 2-2 draw. Fortunately though, they have a good momentum coming here, as they won five of their last six competitive games.
Jorelyn Carabali, and Carolina Arias are both going to patrol their central defense, while Monica Ramos, and Manuela Vanegas will both operate as full-backs. Additionally, they will have to rely on Linda Caicedo, who is their key when it comes to attacks.
South Korea Women
South Korea on the other hand are like their opponents, having a Round-of-16 finish as their best finish in the World Cup. They first entered in the World Cup in 2003, but failed to qualify for the 2007 and 2011 editions. South Korea returned in 2015 though, where they end up in the Round-of-16. Now that they have a chance for a better finish here, South Korea is not looking to waste any chances here. South Korea were able to book their spots in the World Cup as the runners-up of the 2022 Women’s Asian Cup. They suffered a 3-2 defeat against China in the finals, which could have been a huge boost for them here. Fortunately, they were able to win their last friendlies against Haiti in a 2-1 comeback victory, giving them a good momentum here.
Kim Hye-ri, Lim Seon-joo, and Shim Seo-yeon are all going to man their defense, while Choo Hyo-joo, and Jang Sel-gi are all looking to be at the wing-back. Ji So-yun, and Cho So-hyun on the other hand are both looking to cooperate in the middle.
