Australia Women to go deep at home

Australia Women to go deep at home

Australia Women are aiming to make use of their home advantage, as they aim for a positive start against Ireland Women. This will be the eighth time that Australia qualified for the World Cup, after they are appointed as co-host for this edition. Ireland on the other hand is a stranger in the international stage, as this is their first World Cup appearance. These two teams are both in the Group B, where they are grouped along with Canada and Nigeria. Australia and Ireland already met during the friendlies, where Ireland won in a 3-2 score line. However, when it comes to the competitive stage, this is the first time that these two teams will meet. While Australia have the experience advantage, Ireland is a very tricky team, which works well for them. This meeting will be on July 20, 2023, at 6:00 PM (GMT+8).

Australia is now ready to kick-off their eighth appearance in the Women’s World Cup, as they aim for a better result this time. Although they are an experienced squad, they are a team who have yet to reach a last four in the contest. Their best finish is during the 2007, 2011, and 2015 editions, where they were able to reach the quarter-finals. During their 2019 campaign, they only managed to reach the Round of 16. These records made them hungry to kick-off their season positively, for a chance for a better finish. This squad actually have a good momentum coming here, winning nine of their last 10 matches. Additionally, in those last 10 matches, they were able to score at least twice in eight games. This gives them the confidence that they can win this game, against Ireland.

Unfortunately for Australia, Tameka Yallop is a doubt here, after suffering an injury during their final friendlies match. Sam Kerr though is expected to lead her squad for this campaign, being one of Australia’s best scorer.

Ireland is a team who is set to debut in the World Cup through this match, which is why they are eager to show their skills as a team. They managed to qualify in the World Cup for the first time ever after a 1-0 win against Finland Women. Unfortunately though, they are from a 3-0 loss against France in the friendlies, which could have been huge for them. That loss did not give them the confidence that could have been a huge help for their World Cup debut. However, when it comes to competitive matches, this squad is actually doing pretty well, going unbeaten in their last eight competitive games. Six of those matches all ended with victories, which gives them a better chance here. Ireland’s biggest advantage in this game is their well-balanced squad, which will surely produce numbers for them.

Just like Australia, Ireland also have an injury concern coming into this game. They are hopeful to have Denise O’Sullivan on their squad, in-time for their World Cup opener. She suffered a shin injury during their friendlies against Colombia, which puts her a doubt here. Kyra Carusa is expected to lead her squad, as she is one of the most reliable in their squad.

Prediction:

Australia Women (2.0)
Odds: -0.87
